  时间状语，是指表示时间的词或词组，一般放在句子的末尾或开头，表在过去某个特定时间发生且完成的动作，或过去习惯性动作，不强调对现在的影响，只说明过去。一个时间状语只能表示一种时态。当充当时间状语的副词如now、then等位于句首时，且谓语动词为be、come、go等时，句子要构成完全倒装，否则不一定用倒装。

  有时需要倒装，一般都是正常语序。用表示时间的连词连接一个句子作状语，这样的主从复合句就是时间状语从句。连接时间状语从句的连接词有：when, before, after, while, as soon as, until, since...... 这里要注意一点的是，如果主句是一般将来时，从句只能用一般现在时表示将来意义。hardly(scarcely, rarely)…when / before, no sooner…than相当于as soon as之意。主句用过去完成时，从句用一般过去时。当hardly, scarcely, rarely和no sooner位于句首时，主句应用倒装语序。例如：He had no sooner arrived home than he was asked to start on another journey. 他刚到家，就被邀请开始另一旅程。No sooner had the sun shown itself above the horizon than he got out of bed to commence work.太阳刚从地平线上升起，他就起床劳动去了。Hardly had I sat down when he stepped in.我刚坐下，他就进来了。He had hardly fallen asleep when he felt a soft touch on his shoulder.这个***人刚要入睡就感到肩膀上被轻轻一触。

  一般的时间状语从句位于句首，后从句有时候是需要倒装的，但一般都不需要，都是正常语序。　副词only置于句首， 强调方式状语、 条件状语、 地点状语、 时间状语等状语时， 主句要进行部分倒装。如果被only所强调的状语为状语从句， 该状语从句不倒装， 只对主句进行倒装。例如： Only in a big city was it possible to buy a new wheelchair. 只有在大城市里才能买到新轮椅。注意： 如果放于句首的only所修饰的不是状语时， 该句不用倒装。例如： Only John can save me. 只有约翰能够救我。Only some of the children passed the examination. 只有几个孩子通过了考试。
